Inverness city is ideally situated for day trips around the Highlands. Within a short distance you can visit Cawdor Castle (pictured here), Brodie Castle, Culloden Battlefield, Fort George and the prehistoric Clava Cairns. The popular seaside resort of Nairn with beautiful sandy beaches is only 17 miles from Inverness. To the north of Inverness, take a trip to the historic towns of Cromarty, Strathpeffer and Beauly with nearby Glen Ord Distillery and Moniack Wineries. Further afield, you could visit Dunrobin Castle, Dornoch, Ullapool or the Isle of Skye in a day's drive. For those without a car, guided minibus day trips run from Inverness city centre to a variety of attractions in the Highlands. Boat trips operate from Inverness, Nairn, Cromarty and Avoch. Take a cruise on Loch Ness (pictured left) to see the ruins of Urquhart Castle or see the dolphins in Moray Firth. For outdoor enthusiasts there are plenty of opportunities for golf, cycling, walking, mountaineering, watersports, etc. A variety of events take place throughout the year in Inverness and the surrounding area including Highland Games, music festivals, clan gatherings, etc.
